WELCOME to e-NEWS

from the HCHS Foundation

e-NEWS is published to help alumni and friends of Hinsdale Central High School keep current with the school and the Foundation. If you still live in the area, we hope the news will entice you to come out for events and see a great group of young people in action. For alums and friends alike, we encourage you to take part in the Central community by supporting the Foundation in its efforts to enrich the exceptional educational environment that exists at our school.

SAVE JUNE 16 FOR THE FOUNDATION’S BIG FUNDRAISER & GOLF EVENT

Mark your calendar now for The Jodie on June 16 at Oak Brook Hills Resort. It’s a day of fun, food and fundraising—with Central as the beneficiary. We hope you can come for golf, or an informal supper, or that you’ll send a check if you can’t make the date. Your contribution spells success. Reserve a place electronically or pledge or get more information on the golf outing.

RECOMMEND SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE FOR THE HALL OF FAME

Nominations are due soon. Get an application here . This is a great program, one that not only acknowledges important contributions to the community but also brings excellent role models to the attention of the teens at Central. Nominees can come from all walks of life, and needn’t be graduates of HCHS.

GRADUATES CAN GET TOGETHER RIGHT HERE

More than 1,900 graduates have registered with our alumni database and we want that number to grow. Have you logged in yet? It’s easy and, once you’ve registered, you can search for friends by class year or last name. This is also the place to find out about specific class websites and reunion dates. Friends of Hinsdale Central High School are very welcome to register to receive future editions of this newsletter.

Interested in joining a new Alumni Association to be sponsored by the Foundation? If you’ve got experience, ideas or advice that would get this project off the ground quickly, contact us at [email protected].

HELP US KEEP HINSDALE CENTRAL AT THE TOP

John Zaremba, Foundation President

Not every graduate of this amazing high school is lucky enough to remain nearby and in touch with Central when they become adults. No matter how far you move, though, it’s easy to show support for your alma mater just by supporting the Hinsdale Central High School Foundation. Every year we raise money to improve some aspect of the educational experience. This year, the Foundation awarded several grants to Central teachers to further their efforts in advancing character development at the school. We chose this particular project because it is widely recognized that a positive school climate contributes significantly to improved learning.

How will we help next year? That remains to be seen, but our fundraising efforts for that next project are definitely underway as we finalize plans for The Jodie, the Foundation’s annual charity golf event. We hope alumni will come out in force to play 18 holes at Oak Brook Hills Resort on June 16. If you don’t golf or can’t fit a round into your schedule, we hope you’ll join us for dinner that evening, or at the very least consider a contribution in your absence.

The work the Foundation undertakes depends upon the generosity of Central alumni and friends. Your gift toward the golf invitational is extremely important and can be made in a moment using the secure e-contribution process available on the Foundation website by clicking on Golf Outing.

Thanks for your loyalty to what we consider Illinois’ No. 1 high school, and for your continuing interest in the Foundation.

FOUNDATION PRESENTS PROGRAM ON SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL LEARNING

The Hinsdale Central Foundation joined the elementary District 181 Foundation to host a program focused on social and emotional learning. Dr. Maurice Elias, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University and co-author of a book on this important topic in education, spent two days working with representatives of both school districts and delivered a speech at the Robert Crown Center for Health Education in Hinsdale. District 181, the largest feeder district in the Hinsdale Central attendance area, is examining development of a comprehensive and coordinated approach to social and emotional learning. To learn more, see the Lecture Series page on the website.

YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM RECOGNIZED FRESHMEN ON FEBRUARY 26

The Foundation honored the significant academic achievement attained by freshmen at the end of their first semester with reception for them and their parents held at the high school. Students received awards to encourage continued accomplishments. To learn more, see the Young Scholars page on the HCHS Foundation website.

LOCAL BUSINESSES INVITED TO USE CENTRAL’S INTERN PROGRAM

If you could benefit from an extra set of hands at work and would like to help a student learn about your business or profession at the same time, Hinsdale Central’s intern program is just the thing. There is no pay involved; instead, students receive credit for the hours they spend with their business mentor. Juniors and seniors are eligible and expected to provide 50-75 hours in order to receive their grade. Roughly half the time while on the job is devoted to observation and participation in the daily operations of the mentor organization. The balance of the time can be used at the discretion of the mentor (filing, answering phones, modest maintenance, etc). The intern program is a win-win for all concerned. For more information or to joint venture with the school, phone teacher Karen Russo at 630. 570.8284 or email [email protected].

ODDS & ENDS

TRIVIA CORNER

The Class of 57 has industriously compiled forgotten facts about Hinsdale Central and its attendance areas. Here is one of their memory teasers. Answer will appear in the next edition of the Foundation’s e-NEWS. If you have a stumper you’d like to share, send it to [email protected]. Remember to include the question and answer plus your name and class.

Who taught dancing lessons at the Community House?

Answers to question/s from last e-NEWS:

Remember the listening booths in the Hinsdale Record Shop? Where was the store located

On the north side of First Street between Washington and the alley.

MEMORABILIA IN DEMAND

Whether you remember Central as HTHS or HCHS, we need you. An effort is underway to obtain school memorabilia for display in the Alumni Room. Donations are most welcome and will be credited in your name while on display. Or loan your memorabilia if you can’t part with it forever. Contact Charla Russell, District 86 director of community relations, at (630) 570.8212 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

THE BOOSTERS CLUB

There are lots of reasons to support Boosters Club, but the best might be that this is the only place to get Central “spirit attire”—shirts, pants, caps, jackets, cushions, warmups, socks, accessories of all kinds. For that special gift or something just for you, go to www.theboosters.com.
