Hinsdale Central High School Foundation Lecture Series

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING LECTURE

The Hinsdale Central Foundation joined the District 181 Foundation in hosting a January 21 Dinner and Conversation with Dr. Maurice Elias, an expert and author on social and emotional learning. Attending the event at the Robert Crown Center for Health Education were representatives from the Hinsdale Central Foundation and the Hinsdale High School District 86 Board of Education, Dr. Roger Miller and Hinsdale Central Dean Pam Bylsma. They joined guests from the District 181 Foundation, Board of Education, administration, area agencies and municipalities, and the new Regional Superintendent of Education.

Dr. Elias spent Tuesday, January 21, with District 181 teachers in an in-service on social and emotional learning. On Wednesday, he met with small groups of parent leaders and school and community representatives to discuss ways they could support implementation of social and emotional learning. Dr. Elias is a professor of psychology at Rutgers University and co-author of Emotionally Intelligent Parenting: How to Raise a Self-Disciplined, Responsible, Socially Skilled Child and Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers.

District 181, the largest feeder elementary district in the Hinsdale Central attendance area, has been exploring development of a district wide comprehensive and coordinated approach to social and emotional learning in its nine schools.
