WELCOME to  e-NEWS from the HCHS Foundation

Volume 1, Issue 2

July 2002

e-NEWS is published to help alumni and friends of Hinsdale Central High School keep current with the school and the Foundation. If you still live in the area, we hope the news will entice you to come out for events and remain a part of the Central community. For alums and friends alike, we encourage you to support the Foundation in its efforts to enrich the exceptional educational environment that exists at Central. Look for regular issues of this electronic newsletter in Fall, Winter and Spring during the school year.

To keep e-NEWS heading your way, let us know when your e-mail address changes by going to www.hchsfoundation.org/alumni/alumni.asp and logging in. This takes you to the Members page where you can update any registration information, including your new e-mail address. You might want to bookmark this link.

If you happen to delete this e-mail but want to refer back to the newsletter later, you’ll always find the most current issue of e-NEWS available on the Foundation website. Just go to www.hchsfoundation.org and click on Newsletter. You might want to bookmark this link, too.

The Foundation is interested in your suggestions and comments about this newsletter and all our educational programs. Contact us at [email protected].

GLITCHES, GRADUATES AND GOLF

John Zaremba, President

I am pleased with all the favorable feedback received regarding our first electronic newsletter and I hope you will spread the word to your friends about the Foundation, its website and e-NEWS. As with any rollout, there were a few glitches for which we apologize. Thanks especially to all you Mac users for your patience; we’re working to correct the transmission problem.

As the school year came to a close, Central graduated another outstanding class of seniors. Their teachers prepared them well. The Foundation recognized these students at the Senior Honors Assembly on May 22 and hosted a reception following the ceremonies. Parents applaud the role the Foundation plays at Central, supporting and acknowledging student accomplishments. 2001-2002 was noteworthy in every respect for the graduates and the Foundation.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Foundation's annual golf event a success. We enjoyed a great day for a great cause. Nearly 125 people came out for golf and dinner. Plus, the generosity of this year's sponsors was fantastic. Together, we raised approximately $25,000. As we plan for 2002-2003, we rely on the Golf Invitational to provide the bulk of the money needed to operate the Foundation. Your contribution  means we will be able to provide Central with enrichment and recognition opportunities not financially supported by the Board of Education. Promote the work of the Foundation by adding your name to next year's invitation list. Visit our website at www.hchsfoundation.org/golf_outing.htm. You'll be in good company; Central students will win.

If you weren't able to join us for the golf event, I encourage you to make a contribution just the same. Keeping Central the very best high school is an easier mission to undertake when the alumni stand with us. Your gift supports the Foundation’s work and you can make a tax-deductible donation via credit card using our secure e-commerce system. Go to www.hchsfoundation.org/giving.htm.

Enjoy your summer! May it be filled with fond memories, just like those of Central, that last a lifetime.

SENIOR RECEPTION May 22

This year-end event is held in conjunction with Senior Awards to honor the outstanding achievements of the graduating class of 2002. Seventy-six of Central’s most accomplished students were recognized for winning 46 scholarships or awards. For a roster of recipients, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/senior_reception.htm

10TH  JODIE HARRISON GOLF EVENT June 17

Oak Brook Hills Resort

The Jodie helps the Foundation fund an annual grant in support of professional development for a Central teacher. Golfers dodged a few raindrops but nothing serious. The all-day affair included lunch, 18 holes of golf in a relaxed scramble format, cocktails and dinner, awards and prizes, and loads of fun for a very good cause. For more information and to place your name on the invitation list for next year’s outing, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/golf_outing.htm. For a roster of past grant recipients, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/grants.htm.

HALL OF FAME October 4

This program recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the community in the fields of art, athletics, business, education, government, and public or private service. This year, the awards reception honoring the winners will be held October 4 at Ruth Lake Country Club in Hinsdale. For more information on this program, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/hall_of_fame.htm

ODDS & ENDS

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE WAILS WITH BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS

1998 Hinsdale Central Hall of Fame inductee Brian Torff directs the Fairfield University Jazz Ensemble. In April, his musicians were joined in concert by alto saxophonist Fred Lipsius of the superb jazz-rock band from the 60s and 70s—Blood, Sweat and Tears. Torff’s commentary on the work of BS&T: “Anybody who thinks this is a dated sound should go back to the albums and listen again. The musical depth and sophistication of this work still stands as a shining moment in popular music.”

TRIVIA CORNER

The Class of 57 has been industriously compiling forgotten facts about our school and its attendance areas. Here is one of their memory teasers. Answer will appear in the next edition of the Foundation’s e-NEWS. If you have a stumper you’d like to share, send it to [email protected]. Remember to include the question and answer plus your name and class.

There used to be four grocery stores in downtown Hinsdale. Can you name them and where they were located?

Answers to questions from Winter 2002:

What was the nickname given to the policeman who used to patrol downtown Hinsdale? Shadow

You used to be able to bowl right in the Village. Do you remember where? Downtstairs of the news agency on Hinsdale Avenue. The alley had 8 lanes but NO automatic pin setters.

MEMORABILIA IN DEMAND

Whether you remember Central as HTHS or HCHS, we need you. An effort is underway to obtain school memorabilia for display in the Alumni Room. Donations are most welcome and will be credited in your name while on display. Or loan your memorabilia if you can’t part with it forever. Contact Charla Russell, District 86 director of community relations, at (630) 887-1340, ext 445 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

THE BOOSTERS CLUB

There are lots of reasons to support Boosters Club, but the best might be that this is the only place to get Central “spirit attire”—shirts, pants, caps, jackets, cushions, warmups, socks, accessories of all kinds. For that special gift or something just for you, go to www.theboosters.com. Or if you live near Central, consider one of their new Ruby memberships for $100. Get a family pass to athletic events plus a waterproof, windproof game blanket.

LINKS TO THE HINSDALE CENTRAL AREA

Whether you still live near school or have moved far away, we’ve put together some links that can keep you up to date on your old stomping grounds. E-mail us with additional suggestions. Find the links by going to www.hchsfoundation.org/links.htm

AND DON’T FORGET…

Hinsdale Central High School seems to get better every year, and we want to keep it that way. Your help is important. Contributions to the Foundation’s fundraising efforts and The Endowment help create an educational environment that is great, not just good. Please give what you can. Thanks.
