THE ARTS

SPRING PLAY TAKES ON SPORTS — COMEDY SPORTZ

Comedy improvisation was the format for this year’s spring play. No script, no costumes, no stage sets to speak of, but lots of laughs and biting wit characterized the free-wheeling humor skits that held audience attention for almost two hours each night. The 20 cast members were divided into five teams, with each performing on two of the three performance evenings. Improv is spontaneous and involves quick thinking from the individual actors, yet it is also very much about teamwork. The spring “play” had a successful run!

WEST SIDE STORY A MUSICAL HIGH NOTE

The Jets and The Sharks might not have gotten along, but the cast members of the spring musical were certainly in tune with one another. Central’s musically inclined thespians breathed new life into Leonard Bernstein’s music and lyrics.

ETHNIC FAIR TRANSFORMS GYM INTO MINI UNITED NATIONS

Central’s first all-school ethnic fair was held in April, bringing together international food, cultural information, and splendid music/dance performances. Students embraced the traditions of Ireland, China, Pakistan, Iran, Portugal, Indonesia, India, Greece, Lithuania, France, Latin America and, of course, the United States. A great deal was learned under the guise of good times.

STUDENT AUTHORS AND ARTISTS PUBLISH SOLSTICE

The annual compilation of Central’s art and literary explorations has just been released. The Solstice provides insight into student ideas and dreams as expressed in words and pictures. The contents, as always, are intriguing and thought-provoking.
