Volume 1, Issue 1

This is the inaugural edition of e-NEWS, an electronic newsletter published to help alumni and friends of Hinsdale Central High School keep current with the school and the Foundation.

If you still live in the area, we hope the news will entice you to come out for events and remain a part of the Central community. For alums and friends alike, we encourage you to support the Foundation in its efforts to enrich the exceptional educational environment that exists at Central.

Look for regular issues of e-NEWS in Fall, Winter and Spring during the school year.

To keep this electronic newsletter coming your way, let us know when your e-mail address changes by going to www.hchsfoundation.org/alumni/alumni.asp and logging in. This takes you to the Members page where you can update any registration information, including your new e-mail address. You might want to bookmark this link.

If you happen to delete this e-mail but want to refer back to the newsletter later, you'll always find the most current issue of e-NEWS available on the Foundation website. Just go to www.hchsfoundation.org and click on Newsletter. You might want to bookmark this link, too.

A Strong Foundation Makes a Strong School
John Zaremba, President

I need only a minute to remind you how important strong school spirit can be to the future of Hinsdale Central. Alumni and friends have a remarkable opportunity to move the mission of the Foundation forward. Indeed, in the nine years that the Foundation has been active, over one hundred thousand dollars have been raised and distributed, funds that wouldn’t otherwise have been available to enhance educational opportunities for both students and staff.

One of our major goals is to establish an endowment fund that will help secure educational excellence in the years to come. Many other high schools in the Chicago area already have endowments, and I invite you to help create the same financial resource for Central. Alumni contributions and those of friends, in all amounts, can make the difference between an excellent school and a stellar one.

Our focus is to provide unique opportunities for the current student body, opportunities that are not funded by District 86’s annual budget process. Special motivation and recognition for young freshmen scholars and for graduating seniors are only two of our latest commitments. Encouraging the teaching/guidance staff to conduct research into the needs of the lower 10% of the student population excites the Foundation because of the possibilities for improved learning and performance at this level.

I invite you to join us at an upcoming fundraising event. You’ll be in very good company, no doubt about it. And I especially want to introduce you to our secure e-commerce system for tax-deductible donations via credit card. Contributors of $100 or more will receive a logo travel mug, while supplies last.

For information about giving to the Foundation and using our secure e-commerce system, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/giving.htm

The more you get reconnected, the stronger Hinsdale Central will be. Thanks.

Memorabilia In Demand

Whether you think of the school as HTHS or HCHS, we need you. An effort is underway to obtain school memorabilia for display in the Alumni Room. Donations are most welcome and will be credited in your name while on display. Or loan your memorabilia if you can’t part with it forever. Contact Charla Russell, District 86 director of community relations, at (630) 887-1340, ext 445 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

THE FOUNDATION
Programs & Events

Hall of Fame 2001 Induction  September

This program recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the community in the fields of art, athletics, business, education, government, and public or private service. Honorees for the Hall of Fame Class of 2001 were educator Doris Osmond, Dr. Nancy E. Walker, Illinois State Senator Kirk Dillard and sportsman Bill Veeck. The reception was held at the Hinsdale Golf Club with 100 attending the award ceremony. For more information on these four wonderful role models for our students, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/hall_of_fame.htm

Young Scholars Program February 20
Reception, School Auditorium

This event recognizes significant academic achievement among freshman students at the end of their first semester. This year, the second time that the award has been presented, 125 members of the Class of 2005 have been honored for their fine grades. The Foundation recognized 122 students from the Class of 2004. For the recipients of Young Scholars 2005 and more information on this program, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/young_scholars.htm

Teachers Grants February

One of the Foundation’s goals is to encourage excellence in teaching, and the Jodie Harrison Teachers’ Grant is awarded annually to do just that. This year, guidance counselor Paula Kavanaugh received the grant for a project that could prove extremely meaningful to Central. She is going to study students performing in the bottom 10% of their class, the intention being to motivate improved achievement. For information on the grant program and the list of previous recipients, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/grants.htm

Hall of Fame Nominations May 1

Submissions for the Hall of Fame Class of 2002 are due May 1. Since the program began in 1997, 24 Central graduates and loyal friends have been honored for their contributions to our Hinsdale community and beyond. Honorees will be selected in June and announced at a recognition dinner on October 4. If you’d like a nomination form or more information, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/hall_of_fame.htm

Senior Reception May 22

This year-end event is held in conjunction with Senior Awards to honor the outstanding achievements of the graduating class of 2002. Last year, 67 of Central’s most accomplished students were recognized. For more information on the event and a roster of recipients from the Class of 2001, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/senior_reception.htm

10th Annual Jodie Harrison Golf Event June 17
Oak Brook Hills Resort

Come play The Jodie and help the Foundation fund a grant in support of a Central teacher’s professional development. This all day affair includes lunch, 18 holes of golf in a relaxed scramble format, cocktails and dinner, awards and prizes, and loads of fun for a very good cause. This year’s match will be held at Oak Brook Hills Resort in Oak Brook on June 17th. To request an invitation or get more information, go to www.hchsfoundation.org/golf_outing.htm

ODDS AND ENDS

THE BOOSTERS CLUB

There are lots of reasons to belong to Boosters Club, but the best might be that this is the only place to get school “spirit attire”—shirts, pants, caps, jackets, cushions, warmups, socks, accessories of all kinds. Proceeds benefit student activities throughout the school.  For that special gift, go to www.theboosters.com

TRIVIA CORNER

The Class of 57, lead by Bill Tripp, has been industriously compiling forgotten factoids about our school and its attendance areas. Here are a couple of their memory teasers. Answers will appear in the next edition of the Foundation’s e-NEWS. Send your stumpers by e-mail to [email protected]. Remember to include question and answer plus your name and class.

1. What was the nickname given to the policeman who used to patrol downtown Hinsdale?

2. You used to be able to bowl right in the Village. Do you remember where?

LINKS TO THE HINSDALE CENTRAL AREA

Whether you still live near school or have moved far away, we’ve put together some links that can keep you up to date on your old stomping grounds. E-mail us with additional suggestions. Find the links by going to www.hchsfoundation.org/links.htm

And Don’T Forget…

Hinsdale Central High School seems to get better every year, and we want to keep it that way. Your help is important. Contributions to the Foundation’s fundraising efforts and The Endowment help create an educational environment that is great, not just good. Please give what you can. Thanks.
