2001 Inductee Doris Osmond
Field
of Distinction: Music
Doris
Osmond graduated from Township High School in Jersyville Illinois, a small
town 40 miles North of St. Louis in 1945, where she was involved in choir,
band, drama, and also sang in the church choir.
She entered Millikin University in Decatur Illinois in the fall of
1945, where she was involved in choir, vocal, ensembles, and musicals. She
was inducted into Sigma Alpha Iota, an international musical
fraternity for woman. She served as vice president and was a delegate to
the national convention held at the University of Michigan, campus at Ann
Arbor. She graduated from
Millikin University in June of 1949 with a Bachelor of Music Education
Degree. She accepted a
teaching position in the Seneca public school in Illinois, as teacher of
music grades one through twelve. After eight years she resigned that
position and entered the University of Illinois, Urbana campus, where she
was involved in acappella choir and was inducted into Pi Kappa Lamba
national honorary music society with superior scholarship musicianship and
leadership, those qualities being prime requisites for membership.
She graduated in June of 1958 with a Master of Science degree, with
emphasis in music education. She
accepted a teaching position at Hinsdale Township High School, and started
her high school teaching career in late August of 1958, where she was
responsible for all vocal music classes, music concerts, state music
contests, operettas, and choir tours.
On
June 4th, 1974, she was honored by the Village of Hinsdale, for
a standard of excellence, in vocal performance at the High School level.
Mrs. Osmond was also president of the Hinsdale High School teachers
association, and was honored by that same association in recognition of
professional excellence. She became music department chairperson in 1985.
During
the time when Brush Hill Theatre was performing at the community house,
Mrs. Osmond directed the orchestra for Bye Bye Birdie, and performed
in Flower Drum Song. Mrs.
Osmond retired in June 1988, and since that time has been involved with
the music program at Christ Church in Oakbrook, Illinois.
Mrs. Osmonds husband Merrill passed away in 1956.
She now lives in a
new home in Woodridge with her beloved companion, a cockapoo dog named
Holly.
