2000 Inductee Marty Riessen
Field
of Distinction: Athletics
Someone
once said that Hinsdale Tennis began with Marty Riessen and they would be
right. In simple terms, Marty
put Hinsdale and Illinois tennis on the map.
By the time he had graduated, in 1960, Marty had won the State
Tennis Singles Championship all 4 years!
He never lost a single set in high school.
In his senior year he won 49 out of 53 sets 6-0, 6-0, losing only 9
games total that season. He
was an All-State Basketball player. He
was the MVP in Tennis, Basketball and Cross-Country at Hinsdale Central.
Following graduation, Marty attended Northwestern University where
he was a 3-time Big Ten Singles & Doubles Champion and reached the
Singles Finals of the NCAA 3 years in a row and the Doubles Semi-Finals
twice. As a professional
player he reached world singles ranking of #8, in 1972 and #9 the
following year. Later he
became a successful coach guiding Tracy Austin to the U.S. Open
Singles Championship. Marty also coached the last U. S. Olympic Tennis Team as well
as the U.S. Tennis Federation Ladies team.
He is a Legends Player at present where he has played and
beaten both Rod Laver & Ken Rosewall.
Marty was inducted into the I.T.A. Hall of Fame in 1989.
He is married to April and they have 2 daughters.
Currently, he is splitting his time between Columbus, Ohio
where he heads up a Tennis Club and Santa Barbara, California.
