![]() 1998 Inductee Dr. Bert C. Piggott
While a student at Hinsdale Township High School, Dr. Piggott was an outstanding football and basketball player, was the conference pole vault champion, and after an undefeated season, won the Illinois State High School heavyweight boxing championship. As fullback for the Illini, he played in the 1947 Rose Bowl (Illinois 45 - UCLA 14) under coach Ray Elliot. Dr. Piggott also played professional football for the Los Angeles Dons. Dr. Piggott's accomplishments as a coach, teacher, and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University's Athletic Director are numerous. He was a Professor of Heath, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and taught all activity courses in the curriculum except swimming. As head football coach (1957 - 1968), he amassed a 63 percent winning record, one that has never been matched or exceeded. Under his tutelage at least six NC A&T players have gone on to excel in the professional football leagues. Dr. Piggott and his teammates have been honored in the Professional Football Hall of Fame, Canton, Ohio; and he has been inducted as a coach in the North Carolina A & T State University Hall of Fame. Dr. Piggott passed away in 1999.
